In a letter sent to Service Workers United members, President Kurt Edelman and Secretary-Treasurer Laphonza Butler give an overview of the things we've accomplished together in the last six months, including member growth, victories, contract gains, and increased job security for our members.
Among them are the following:
- More than 18,000 workers have united. Another 1,800 workers from 40 worksites have united since December 1st, bringing the total number of workers who have won their union thanks to our campaign to more than 18,000 - working at some of the largest corporations in the world.
- We've won key contract gains. Members at Dillard and Xavier universities in New Orleans just voted to ratify union contracts with better wages, benefits, working conditions, and premium pay for those who work split shifts.
- Members are able to stand up and win.A union member at the Sodexo laundry in Buffalo, N.Y. was able to win his job back and get more than $15,000 in back pay after it was found that he was unlawfully terminated. We're currently fighting to win more than 30 more arbitration cases like this one.
- We've got job security. We've worked to create changes in N.J. state regulations so that when a new company comes into a school, it's required by law to offer jobs to the workers who were there before. And this fall, we're gearing up (and we'll need you!) to win more funding for food service jobs.
We've got a lot of work to do, and we're going to keep building on our victories.
